1. The Mauritius Business Excellence Award 2008 |

Introduction
In this era of globalization, the development of the necessary competitive edge
has become a determinant factor for survival. In this context, the Ministry of
Industry, Small & Medium Enterprises, Commerce and Cooperatives is organizing
the “Mauritius Business Excellence Award” among Mauritian businesses to motivate
them to continuously improve ways of doing business. The competition has been
inspired from similar awards implemented by enterprises adopting leading-edge
management practices.
Objectives

To provide recognition to businesses that are making continuous efforts to improve management and operational practices. |

To identify role models adopting world class practices for others to emulate. |

To encourage and stimulate best business practices for achievement of higher productivity and competitiveness |

To promote use of economic and productivity assessment tools among participants for improvement in management and operational practices. /td> |
Eligibility
The competition is open to all businesses in manufacturing, agriculture, tourism, financial and other services sector.
Evaluation Criteria
The evaluation criteria for the Award are based on the following key areas of a business:

Selection Procedures
 |
A pre-selection of entries will be carried out through economic productivity and capability assessment. |
 |
 |
A Technical Assessment Team will undertake an in-depth assessment of preselected entrepreneurs based on the defined criteria. |
 |
 |
A Panel of Jury comprising the Vice-Chancellor of University of Mauritius, the Director General of University of Technology, Mauritius, the Chairperson of
MCCI, the Chairperson of Enterprise Mauritius, the Chairperson of SEHDA, the Chairperson of Mauritius Quality Institute and the President of the Association
of Professional Engineers will examine the recommendations of the Technical Assessment Team and make final recommendations to a Steering Committee
which comprises public and private sector representatives. The decision of the Steering Committee will be final and binding. |
Awards
The two best enterprises in each of the 3 categories, namely small, medium and large businesses will be rewarded.
For the purpose of the award, the businesses are defined as follows:
* Small : less than 10 persons
* Medium : 10 to 50 persons
* Large : above 50
The Award

The Business Excellence Award competition is organised by the Ministry of Industry, Small & Medium Enterprises, Commerce & Cooperatives. |

The Award competition is open to all enterprises in the business sector in Mauritius. |
 |
 |
The enterprise must have been in business for the past three years. |
 |
 |
The Award competition will be organised on an annual basis. |
 |
 |
There will be two recipients in each of three categories namely, small, medium and large enterprises. |
Entries
 |
Entry to the Award competition shall be made on the prescribed application form. |
 |
 |
Entries shall be made prior to the deadline for submission of application. |
 |
 |
The organiser reserves the right to reclassify, recategorise or reject an entry that does not comply with the requirement of the competition. |
Assessment
 |
Assessment shall be made on a set of criteria established for pre-selection and final selection. |
 |
 |
Assessment shall be carried out by the designated pre-selection assessment staff, technical assessment team and jury members. |
 |
 |
All entries shall be examined to ensure that eligibility requirements are met. |
 |
 |
The Jury members shall also make recommendations on the basis of established criteria. They may also visit the enterprises. |
 |
 |
Jury members shall be required to withdraw themselves in case of conflict of interest. |
 |
 |
The Jury panel shall submit a report on its recommendations to the Steering
Committee. |
 |
 |
The Steering Committee shall make the final selection. |
 |
 |
Decisions of the Steering Committee on the Award shall be final and binding and no
representations shall be entertained. |
 |
 |
The Ministry reserves the right not to present an award in a category in any given
year. |
Information and Confidentiality
 |
The participants shall provide relevant information and data for assessment to
persons officially appointed for that purpose and members of the jury. |
 |
 |
The participants shall allow the pre-selection assessment staff, the technical
assessment team and jury members to visit their enterprises. |
 |
 |
All information and data provided will be treated with strict confidentiality. |
 |

Trophies and Certificates and Publicity
 |
The Award shall consist of trophies and certificates. |
 |
 |
All successful entries shall be notified before official announcement. |
 |
 |
Winners shall grant the Ministry the right to publish their names and photographs. |
 |
 |
The Award Recipient may use the appellation and the logo of the Award for publicity
and other commercial purposes. |
General
 |
All entries shall become the property of the organiser and will not be acknowledged
or returned. |
 |
 |
Participation in the Award competition shall imply acceptance of the rules and
regulations as mentioned above. |
 |
 |
The Steering Committee shall be the deciding authority on any matter not specifically
covered by these rules. |
